graham, final question, can chuck hagel become secretary of defense if he's the president's nominee? >> a lot of republicans asking hard questions, i don't think he's going to get many republican votes. i like chuck, but his positions, i didn't know all of them. are out of the mainstream and well to the left of the president. i think it will be a challenging nomination, the hearings will matter. >> if i were in the senate on the armed services committee, and he was nominated i would have some serious questions to ask him. >> i think senator engle will not be nominated or not be confirmed. the concede in the obama white house was these are republicans. on foreign policy, he's been way to the left of president obama. >>> former nebraska senator chuck hagel has been leaked not nominated leaked as a potential nominee for secretary of defense, and there was already a massive counter offensive against him. it does have more substance to it, than the attacks against susan rice. a fair amount of that substance consists of insinuations. the sides are forming, there's the chuck hagel defense

on his agenda. one being the next secretary of defense. did you expect to see chuck hagel of all people so embattled from both sides? >> well, yes, sort of. yourn, you know that john mccain hates the guy. you know, he -- and he didn't create a lot of friends toward the end of his time and throughout most of his time as a senator. because he didn't really tow the party line on policy. he broke with republicans on the iraq war. and so he oftentimes would give democrats a way of saying what they were doing was bipartisan and then had the sheen of the veblt of a guy like hagel so it's this guy that's been a thorn in their side the whole time. now here he is he might be elevated to secretary of defense. and you could see that's going to bother the same types of people that seem to be bothered by every other person that's floated by obama. and that's mccain and graham and those fellas. >> but we've heard about this mccain not liking or hating chuck hagel. what's that about? what's their history? from one maverick to another. >> exactly. there's only so much room in the senate for mavericks. y

that defensive line, the go line and, basically president obama cannot get in, and there is -- what we know is the republicans have agreed to increasing tax revenue but we need to have the spending cuts. if we don't get them under control, what will happen is, we are seeing consumer sentiment is done and businesses uncertain and the economy will stay sluggish and not grow. >> rick: richard, last word, 20 seconds. does the president move at all on entitlements and spending cuts republicans are demanding? >> my forecast is, we'll end up with increased taxes after january 1. for people making $500,000 and over and again, most republicans east see that as a cut and i think the president put spending cuts, medicare, medicaid, cuts, hasn't talked about it much and put them on the table and we will have one-to-one spending cuts, tax increase, that will satisfy pretty much everybody. >> rick: good to see you, merry christmas and happy new year to you both. thanks. >> thank you. >> jamie: it is almost always good news, this time of year, people get temporary jobs and actually the number of temporary
mate be good, but could december mate defense. and that's the real concern i have is that these cuts are almost arbitrarily 50-50 and the defense is not 50% of the budget, and they will drastically cut weapon systems and the deployment of our troops. >> i can understand that you would be concerned about that. in terms of this christmas break now that you are home and the president is in hawaii, but the president suggested it is a cooling off period for everyone. are you optimistic that next week things could change all of a sudden and a deal could happen? >> i am optimistic if we can get one done in the hour. people are far apart. many republicans feel they were elected under a pledge not to raise taxes no matter what. democrats were elected under a pledge that everyone over a quarter million dollars has to have their taxes locked in. once we come back, actually right now talks are going on right now i'm sure between the staffs of the speaker and the white house. it is not as if nothing has been done. if people want a deal they can have it. if not, it can be difficult. i say it is 50
